Meet Dr. Larry Russell
I am a world-renowned water quality expert, traveling across the country and around the globe to consult with water districts on the best practices for improving and maintaining water quality.
I earned my BS, MS, and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. At Berkeley, I was taught that civil engineering is about doing the most with the least. I learned that every decision about water—whether it’s about rebar, aquifers, safety testing, or conservation efforts—is ultimately a decision about the kind of community we want to live in. I’ve carried that lesson with me throughout my career, always viewing my work in water quality as a public service and putting people at the center of everything I do.
Currently, I consult for the European Union and numerous cities and towns across the U.S. and around the world. I am also honored to be known as the People’s Water Expert in the lawsuits brought by the residents of Flint, Michigan.
Despite my long and global career, I am most proud of my work here at home in Marin. I have served on the Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) Board of Directors for over 20 years. During this time, I’ve collaborated with a diverse group of board members and staff, always advocating for the people and bringing my expertise as a water quality professional. My focus has been on keeping our water safe, clean, and reliable, while working to ensure it remains affordable for all residents.
